In Christian culture I think we can get caught up with the term modesty and what that actually means.
Like does God actually care what I wear?
According to some, modesty can look like nothing above the knee or past the shoulder, but for others modesty can look like shorts and a tank top. So what is appropriate? What is the line, we often ask?
Perhaps we need to rethink modesty, not as a line that you attempt to get as close to as possible without crossing, but instead as a posture of the heart.
Hang with me here.
Perhaps modesty isn’t so much an outward expression as it is an inward expression?
“You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.” 1 Peter 3:4
Think about it. When we get dressed and put makeup on what is your motivation? Where is your heart at?
Is your mindset on what others will think? Do you dress in a way to draw attention to yourself?
Or perhaps you are a bit insecure and find yourself dressing in such a way to hide yourself, or certain parts of your body that you are ashamed of. Are we placing our worth and value in how we look?
Whether we try to hide our bodies or flaunt it, we can be caught captive by our bodies and outward appearances.
Modesty has a reputation of being restrictive and limiting. But what if it was actually intended to do the opposite? Modesty is meant to bring freedom!
Now this is not to say that clothes or caring what you look like is wrong, but what is your focus?
To build your kingdom? Or His?
Are you focused on yourself or His face?
Now before your brain explodes from that deep thought provoking stuff, here are some easy take aways that will help you practically live more confidently and freely:
1. Dress to be comfortable! Enough that allows you to be forgetful about yourself, and freed up to think about others.
2. Have integrity with what you wear, so that you are comfortable and the same person in all situations – with your dad, brothers, at a party etc.
This can be a constant stumbling block for many of us, so remember to give yourself grace and keep on seeking His face!
walking this road with you,
Daysha
